PC users can reformat the RAID array for NTFS or exFAT. It works fine out of the box, so if you're happy with its default RAID 5, HFS+ format, you can use the G-Speed Studio without loading the utility program. The array supports RAID 0, 1, 1E, 10, and 5 (default). You can download the G-Speed Studio utility program from G-Technology's website if you want more control over the device, like resetting the RAID level or monitoring the individual drive mechanisms from your Mac or PC. The Drobo Gen3 is an external drive enclosure that comes without drives, but its proprietary hardware ensures you can use its four drive bays with any capacity drive mechanism, though at the expense of a slower transfer rate. The Promise Pegasus R4 drive array also uses four drive mechanisms, but in RAID 0 configuration by default for speed (and a smaller capacity 4TB total to go along with its lower price tag). The drive is formatted HFS+ from the factory, so that's how we tested it. Spare drive kits are available from G-Technology for $699.95 (for a 6TB mechanism). If you reset the RAID controller to RAID 0, you'll get the total 24TB capacity of those drives, but you won't get any drive failure protection (RAID 5 trades some of the space for redundancy). If any one of the four drives fail, you can still access your data and replace the bad drive to rebuild the RAID array. By default, there are four 6TB enterprise-class drives set up together in a RAID 5 array for a total capacity of about 18TB. Since it has a rounded chassis, we don't recommend that you use it on its side, and since the hot-swappable drive access is under a door on the top panel, you can't stack one on top of the other, either.įour hard drive mechanisms bolted to locking sleds give the G-Speed Studio both its astonishing capacity and its speed.
The internal power supply means you won't have to worry about a power brick cluttering up your desk. The rectangular front panel only has a backlit G-Technology logo on it, while the back has the a Kensington lock port, power button, standard 3-pin jack for the power cord, and two Thunderbolt 2 ports.

That's a little larger than the Apple Mac Pro it's designed to compliment. The G-Speed Studio is a large, black, irregular cylinder that looks oval from the top view, and measures about 10 by 8 by 8.5 inches (HWD). It's an effective way to store large photo, sound, or video collections and several years' worth of work files, though at this price, it's more cost effective for the proprietor of a graphics arts business rather than a home user. It's a large external RAID array, holding four hot-swappable hard drive cartridges for up to 24TB of enterprise-class hard-drive storage. The styling of the G-Technology G-Speed Studio (24TB) ($3,599) marks it instantly as a companion for the Apple Mac Pro.
